Wehr-Hobelmann-Gottlieb Brewing & Malting Co., Baltimore, Maryland Chromolithography on Paper

Lithographer: A. Hoen & Co. Baltimore

Date of manufacture: Circa 1888-1899

Image dimensions: 32”w x 24”h Overall dimensions including frame: 39”w x 31”h

One of the rarest and most beautiful factory scenes, this early lithograph combined the use of color, angles and shading to highlight an incredible brewery presentation. The detail of the street scene in front of the brewery is remarkable with horse-drawn wagons, trolley cars and people walking along the streets in period attire. Globe Brewery of the Wehr-Hobleman-Gotliebb Brewing and Malting Company began operations in 1888 in Baltimore, MD. As part of a consolidation, Globe Brewery was then sold in 1899 to a consortium and was thereafter continued under different ownership.

There has been a minor amount of professional restoration, primarily around the border/edges as well as several small areas within the image area. The frame appears to be original with a small amount of lost gesso in the upper left corner and around two small nail holes on the sides.

We are aware of only one other example of this lithograph, held in an advanced collection.
