National Brewing Co., Baltimore, Maryland

Manufacturer: Continental Can Co.

Date of manufacture: Circa 1936

Contents: 12 oz.

Reference #: USBC 174-22

One of the finest, most graphically desired cone top cans. This flat-bottom inverted-rib cone top is the rarest variation of this brand. The condition is exceptionally clean and this is the actual can pictured in the USBC book. The top boasts a correct National Brewing Ale cap with the script “Ale” letters that match the front. The flat bottom is shiny-clean, as is the silver seam. This silver enamel paint is prone to humidity spots and this example has none. It is simply a spectacular can. The can has a printed copyright date of 1934 near the seam and has lower blue side panels that state: “This is the CAP SEALED BEER CAN. It brings this beer to you with its fine flavor unimpaired….light cannot penetrate it. It visits no home …………but yours. It cools quickly and takes up little space.”

As one of the earliest cone tops, it has survived in pristine condition, with every tiny word clearly legible. It serves as a top example of American advertising design and production quality with outstanding graphics that patriotically present “National Ale” overlaid against the map of the United States. Truly spectacular!

Provenance back to the Bob McCoy Collection.
