Manufacturer:  F. Tuchfarber Co.
Date of manufacture:  Circa 1890
Dimensions:  image 34” w x 23-1/2” d, including frame: 39-3/4” h x 29-3/4” d
Comments:  This amazing very early reverse-on-glass sign is one of only three known to us. Still in its original frame, this piece was created with a production process that creates a stunning visual effect that simply cannot be adequately portrayed in photographs. The entire scene is rendered in black and brown ink printed onto the glass, which is then backed by gold and silver leaf and/or paint. The reflectivity of the leaf creates different perspectives and light effects depending on the angle from which the sign is viewed. It’s incredible how much depth can be projected with so few colors and in just two dimensions.

The piece is in all-original condition. The original oak frame has a wonderful patina and the backing is original, too. The only miniscule blemish is a pair of light scratches though the paint in the “NE” of “GENESEE.” These are shown a close-up photo.

We date this piece to circa 1890 based on the electrified streetcar, the fashions worn by the pedestrians, and the style of the locomotive. In addition, the manufacturer, F. Tuchfarber and Co., was in business for a relatively short time, between 1881 and 1900.

Sieze the opportunity to own this unique piece of New York brewing history. You may never have another chance.
