Presented here is one of the most spectacular pieces of reverse glass breweriana in the hobby. The beauty of the image with rich, vibrant colors is perfectly presented with the surrounding black border that accentuates the red, gold and blues within. The image itself is iconic with the eagle soaring from the flag, holding the ABC ribbon. The image was produced by the Meek & Beach Co., Coshocton, OH, likely using a lithography process similar to that developed by F. Tuchfarber and Co. of Cincinnati. The process was designed to eliminate the wrinkling of prints not mounted on canvas. Starting with a sheet of tissue paper, a coat of gum arabic was first applied, then a coat of varnish, and then a coat of white. The picture was printed on this surface in as many colors as the design required—often sixteen or eighteen—over which a coat of varnish and then of gum, were applied. The picture could then be dampened, laid on a piece of clean glass, dampened on the back, and the paper slipped off. This left only the ink film adhering to the glass and, of course, no wrinkles. This museum-worthy piece is impressive both in quality and size.
The American Brewing Company operated beginning in 1882 and was incorporated in St. Louis in 1890. The brewery operated under this name until 1906. Based on the brewery operating history and the timeframe of the lithographer, the sign is estimated to have been produced between 1895 and 1905.
The condition of the reverse glass is outstanding (near mint), free of paint restoration, lifting, and flaking. The original oak frame with a gold gesso liner has a classic patina to match.
In terms of rarity, there is one other similar example known to us that is in comparable condition, however the frame and the image are significantly different. No other examples of this image in similar condition are known to us.
